Colchester celebrated a cheesecake-rich, combined Friday night/Shavuot service on 22nd May. Familiar tunes and prayers were given added depth with an exploration by the late Lord Sacks of the festival’s meaning and associations. We learnt that not only does Shavuot celebrate the giving of the Torah, but it also marks spring turning into summer. There are, of course, various mysteries surrounding the festival’s timing; 50 days after Pesach, yes – but which date in Pesach kicks off the countdown?!
A thoughtful service was followed by kiddush and a gorgeous cheesecake, courtesy of Reuby’s of Clacton.
Our thanks – as ever – to the service takers, kiddush makers and cheesecake bakers for a was a lovely traditional and sociable evening.
