A Cheder is a very important part of any community, and this is particularly so in a community as small as Colchester. The Cheder meets at the synagogue on Sundays during most of the year, apart from school holidays. School aged children are welcome.

We are fortunate to have three excellent teachers for our Cheder. The main emphasis of the classes is teaching Hebrew reading, but also includes study of our festivals, customs, traditions and culture. Children can be prepared for Bat and Bar-Mitzvah by arrangement.

Group Visits to the Synagogue

Schools and other children’s groups are very welcome to come and see the synagogue. Guided visits take place in term time only and typically run for an hour and a half, depending on the age of the children. They take place by arrangement (see the form below). Due to the limited size of the building we can only accommodate groups of around 30 children plus any accompanying adults. Group leaders are responsible for the conduct and behaviour of their young people.

There is no set charge for visits, but to help us with the running costs we would be very appreciative of a voluntary donation. The amount donated is at the discretion of each group.

Photography of artefacts is permitted.

There is ample parking for cars and minibuses in the synagogue car park, for the duration of the visit. Wheelchair access to the building is via a ramp and inside is all on one level.

If you have any questions about visiting us or would like to make a booking, please fill in this form.
